Laboratory biosafety Online Training Course

Background

The Laboratory biosafety course is a joint effort between the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), Centre for Emergency Preparedness (CEPR), Office of Laboratory Security (OLS), and the Canada Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) , Office of Biohazard Containment and Safety.

The course is comprised of a series of modules, each module addressing a key topic in basic and intermediary levels of laboratory biosafety.

NOTE: The first five modules are now currently underway with another five yet to be developed.

Participants

Recommended for all microbiology laboratories in universities, hospitals, private industry and government departments who have a laboratory handling biological agents.

Course Objective

The objectives of the first five modules in this course are to provide the individual with a deeper knowledge and understanding of:

• Basic microbiology concepts including examining each category of micro-organism and their characteristics;
• The concept of risk assessment and risk groups which includes examining laboratory containment levels & assessing containment level requirements;
• Laboratory acquired infections;
• General safety practices which include operational practices that apply to all containment level laboratories and personal protective equipment; and
• General safety practices and operational practices for containment level 2 and the safe use of Biological Safety Cabinets.
