Minister Of Health Announces Appointments To The National Advisory Council On Aging

Backgrounder

OTTAWA - Health Minister Ujjal Dosanjh today announced new appointments to the National Advisory Council on Aging (NACA).

The new members are Gilbert Barrette and Robert Dobie from Quebec, Roberta Morgan from the Yukon, Bhupinder Kaur Dhillon from British Columbia, Verdon Mercer from Newfoundland and Labrador, and Mike Sommerville from Ontario. The Minister also announced the reappointment of two members of the Council – Mohindar Singh from Manitoba and Lloyd Brunes from the Northwest Territories. This brings the total membership of the Council to 10.

“I am proud to announce these appointments to the National Advisory Council on Aging,” said Minister Dosanjh. “As the Canadian population continues to age, a council responsible for examining relevant seniors’ concerns and issues provides me with important perspectives and views. These Council members each bring shared experiences and abilities that can help shape seniors-related policies, programs and services critical to the health of Canadians.”

NACA was created on May 1, 1980, to assist and advise the Minister of Health on all matters related to the aging of the Canadian population and the quality of life of seniors. This year marks the 25th anniversary of Council. The Council provides this assistance and advice by reviewing seniors’ issues, maintaining ties with stakeholder organizations at many levels, distributing reports and information and stimulating public discussions on aging. Members of the Council are appointed to two or three year terms and come from across Canada and a variety of backgrounds.
