Skills Enhancement for Public Health "Building a Solid Foundation for Public Health Practice"

Online Facilitation

Please note that we are not actively seeking out facilitator applications at this time as no upcoming training sessions are currently planned. We do appreciate your interest in our program and encourage you to forward your resume to us for consideration at a later date. Please also visit our website periodically for future updates.

Become an online facilitator!!

Online facilitators with the Skills Enhancement for Public Health program play a major role in helping to develop a strong, skilled public health workforce. If you are a public health practitioner at the local, regional, provincial/territorial or national level with specialized training in epidemiology or other public health related field, you can become an online facilitator.

Why be a facilitator?

As an online facilitator you will share your knowledge and expertise as you support other public health practitioners in their continuing education efforts. In addition to this benefit, you will also:

  • Receive an online orientation and face-to-face facilitation training with certificate from the Public Health Agency of Canada
  • Practice your newly acquired facilitation skills or perfect the skills you already have
  • Increase your professional skill set
  • Learn along with your team members
  • Network with others from across Canada from a variety of public health disciplines
  • Witness strengthened evidence-based decision making and epidemiology knowledge at the local level

"People are keen - they have been waiting for this for a long time. It's challenging to see the diversity of students - a very positive experience!"
- module facilitator

Facilitator roles and responsibilities

As an online facilitator, you will lead an interprofessional team of 15 to 18 public health practitioners over eight weeks. The learners from across the country will represent a range of public health disciplines and varying levels of public health experience. You will lead and mentor your group of learners. Essentially you will provide feedback, answer questions, encourage communication among learners, and help make activities relevant to the workplace. A back-up facilitator will help with some of the tasks and can step in if you cannot continue. Although back-ups may be experienced facilitators, they may also be in this role to gain experience.

Required skills for facilitators

Facilitators should have at least a Master's degree in epidemiology and/or public health (e.g. epidemiologists or other public health professionals) or equivalent, and have front-line public health experience.

Strong interpersonal, communication and computer technology skills are essential for effective facilitation.

Resources for facilitators

Facilitators are a very important part of the Skills Enhancement program. As a facilitator you will receive the resources that you need to provide high quality services to learners. You will have access to a website that is dedicated to supporting your activities and you will have an opportunity to communicate with other facilitators in an online Discussion Board. You will also become a member of a growing network of public health professionals committed to promoting and supporting learning "

Specific resource material includes facilitation tips, frequently asked questions material, and guidelines for marking assignments submitted by learners. A "lead facilitator" will provide you guidance and support in your online facilitator role.

The British Columbia Institute of Technology's (BCIT) Help Desk will provide you and your team with prompt and appropriate solutions to all your computer system related problems.
