NOVA SCOTIA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, February 4, 2011 – The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

The Honourable Carole A. Beaton, a Provincial Court Judge in Amherst, is appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, Family Division to replace Mr. Justice L.I. O’Neil, who was appointed Associate Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, Family Division.

Madam Justice Beaton received a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Political Science from St. Francis Xavier University in 1984 and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the University of New Brunswick in 1987. She was admitted to the Barristers’ Society of Nova Scotia in 1988.

Madam Justice Beaton was appointed to the Provincial Court in 2002 and to the Family Court in 2003. Prior to her appointment, she was a founding partner of Beaton Blaikie from 1994 to 2002. She was a sole practitioner from 1992 to 1994 and an associate with Creighton & Shatford in Amherst from 1988 to 1992. In 1991, she was appointed a per diem Crown attorney with the Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service. Her main areas of practice were criminal and family law and civil litigation.

Madam Justice Beaton is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, Cumberland Barristers Association, Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society, International Association of Women Judges and the Canadian Association of Provincial Court Judges. She was a board member of the Legal Information Society of Nova Scotia from 2003 to 2005 and has been a presenter to various community groups, organizations and students.

This appointment is effective immediately.
