MINISTER OF JUSTICE APPOINTS DEPUTY REGISTRAR TO THE SUPREME COURT OF CANADA

OTTAWA, June 29, 2011 – The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C. Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the appointment of Ms. Mary Sue McFadyen to the position of Deputy Registrar to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Ms. McFadyen received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Regina in 1980 and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the University of Saskatchewan in 1983, and has been a member of the Law Society of Saskatchewan since 1985. She also holds a Masters of Law Degree from the London School of Economics. Ms. McFadyen was most recently Director General, Legal Services, with the Office of the Ombudsman for National Defence and the Canadian Forces.

The Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court of Canada is responsible for supporting the Registrar in the administration of the Court, and in his or her absence, assumes all of his or her powers and duties. The Office of the Registrar of the Supreme Court of Canada is responsible for all administrative work in the Court and exercises the quasi-judicial powers conferred by the Rules of the Supreme Court of Canada.

This appointment is effective July 18, 2011.
