QUEBEC JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, September 30, 2011 – The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

The Honourable Thomas M. Davis, a lawyer with Borden Ladner Gervais LLP in Montreal, is appointed Puisne Judge of the Superior Court of Quebec in the District of Montréal, to replace Madam Justice D. Richer, who resigned effective April 2, 2011.

Mr. Justice Davis received a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in 1976, a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and a Bachelor of Civil Laws (LL.L.) in 1980 from McGill University. He was admitted to the Quebec Bar in 1981.

Mr. Justice Davis has been a partner with Borden Ladner Gervais LLP since 2000. He was formerly with McMaster Gervais from 1998 to 2000 and McMaster Meighen from 1983 to 1998. He was a lawyer with Lapointe Rosenstein from 1981 to 1983. His main areas of practice were labour and employment law, workers’ compensation, health, administrative and education law.

Mr. Justice Davis was a member of the Nominating Committee of the English speaking section of the Bar of Montréal from 2001 to 2003 and the Committee on Administrative Justice from 1992 to 1995. He has been a member of the Canadian Bar Association since 1983. He is a member of the Québec Order of Industrial Relations Counsellors. Mr. Justice Davis has been a lecturer in employment law for the Faculty of Law of McGill University since 2001. He is a member of the Board of Directors of various community organizations and author of several published papers, as well as co-author of numerous articles.

This appointment is effective immediately.
