BRITISH COLUMBIA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, October 21, 2011 — The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:

The Honourable Ronald S. Tindale, a Judge of the Provincial Court of British Columbia in Prince George, is appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia (Prince George) to replace Mr. Justice E.G. Chamberlist, who resigned as of July 1, 2010.

Mr. Justice Tindale received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia in 1985 and a Bachelor of Laws from Queen's University in 1988. He was admitted to the Bar of British Columbia in 1989.

Mr. Justice Tindale was appointed to the Provincial Court of British Columbia in 2010. Prior to his appointment he had been with Dick Byl Corporation since 2005. He was an associate and partner with Traxler Haines from 1992 to 2005 and Crown counsel in Prince George from 1990 to 1992. He was an associate with Heather Sadler Jenkins from 1989 to 1990. His main practice areas were family law, criminal law, and federal drug prosecutions. He was a bencher for the Law Society of British Columbia from 2006 to 2010.

The Honourable Gregory J. Fitch, a lawyer with the Ministry of the Attorney General in Vancouver, is appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia (Vancouver) to replace Mr. Justice E.J. Rice, who resigned as of July 29, 2011.

Mr. Justice Fitch received a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in 1982 and a Bachelor of Laws in 1985 from Queen's University, and was admitted to the Bar of British Columbia in 1994. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 2005.

Mr. Justice Fitch has been with the Ministry of the Attorney General since 1985. He has been Director, Criminal Appeals and Special Prosecutions, in Vancouver since 2001. He was Director of Legal Services in Victoria from 2000 to 2001 and Deputy Director (Appeals) in Vancouver from 1997 to 2000; he worked with Crown Counsel - Criminal Appeals in Vancouver from 1994 to 1997 and with the Crown Law Office - Criminal in Toronto from 1985 to 1994. His main areas of practice were criminal law and constitutional litigation.

Mr. Justice Fitch has been a member of the Canadian Bar Association/Supreme Court of Canada Liaison Committee since 2007 and Assistant Secretary of the International Society for the Reform of the Criminal Law. He has been executive committee member of the National Joint Committee of Senior Criminal Justice Officials (Pacific Region) since 2003 and a faculty member of the Federation of Law Societies' National Criminal Law Program since 2002. He is an editor or co-editor of several publications, including the Working Manual of Criminal Law (Carswell).

These appointments are effective immediately.
