MANITOBA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, October 5, 2012 — The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

The Honourable Christopher J. Mainella, a lawyer with the Public Prosecution Service of Canada in Winnipeg, is appointed a Judge of Her Majesty’s Court of Queen’s Bench for Manitoba, Trial Division, in Winnipeg, to replace Madam Justice L.A. Duval, who resigned effective September 6, 2011.

Mr. Justice Mainella received a Bachelor of Arts in 1990 from McGill University, a Master of Arts from the University of Western Ontario in 1993, a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Manitoba in 1994 and a Master of Laws with Distinction from the University of London in England, in 2003. He was admitted to the Bar of Manitoba in 1995 and the Bar of Ontario in 2004.

Mr. Justice Mainella has been counsel with the Public Prosecution Service of Canada since 1995 and held a variety of positions, including Crown counsel in the Criminal Law Section of the Department of Justice in Ottawa from 2003 to 2005. He was seconded for six months as Crown counsel with the Crown Prosecution Service of England and Wales in 2003. His main areas of practice were criminal law, constitutional law and extradition.

Mr. Justice Mainella has been vice-principal of the Public Prosecution Service of Canada Advanced School for Prosecutors since 2007. He has been an advocacy instructor to the Bar Admission Course since 2010 and an agent of the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness responsible for electronic surveillance applications in Manitoba since 2001. He has been a member of the National Coordinating Committee for all terrorism prosecutions in Canada since 2010, and for all Supreme Court of Canada cases involving the Director of Public Prosecutions since 2008. He has been a guest lecturer and panellist at numerous conferences.

This appointment is effective immediately.
