NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, Friday, October 5, 2012 – The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

The Honourable Donald H. Burrage, Deputy Minister and Deputy Attorney General of Newfoundland and Labrador, is appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador, Trial Division, to replace Mr. Justice J.P. Adams (St. John’s), who elected to become a supernumerary judge as of August 1, 2012.

Mr. Justice Burrage received a Bachelor of Arts (Philosophy) in 1979 and Master of Business Administration from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1981. He received a Bachelor of Laws from Dalhousie University in 1984. He was admitted to the Bar of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1985 and appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2000.

Mr. Justice Burrage has been Deputy Minister and Deputy Attorney General of Newfoundland and Labrador since 2008 and has been with the Department of Justice since 1992 in various senior positions. He was a lawyer with Halley, Roberts, Barry from 1984 to 1992. His main area of practice was civil litigation.

Mr. Justice Burrage has been a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers since 2008. He has been Chair of the St. George’s Heritage Committee since 2005 and an expedition leader for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards since 2002.

This appointment is effective immediately.
