British Columbia Judicial Appointment Announced
OTTAWA, December 14, 2012 – The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:
The Honourable Douglas W. Thompson, a lawyer with Hatter Thompson Shumka McDonagh, is appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia (Nanaimo), to replace Mr. Justice B.D. MacKenzie, who has been transferred to Victoria.
Mr. Justice Thompson attended the University of Victoria, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1979 and a Bachelor of Laws in 1982. He was admitted to the Bar of British Columbia in 1983, and completed a Master of Laws in 2008.
Mr. Justice Thompson has practised with Hatter Thompson Shumka McDonagh in Victoria since 1986. His main area of practice was civil litigation.
Mr. Justice Thompson was a member of the board of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited from 2003 to 2007, and chair of the Management Review Committee of the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia from 2000 to 2007. He was a sessional lecturer on civil procedure at the University of Victoria from 1995 to 1997. He has been a member of the Council of the Canadian Red Cross (B.C. Coastal Region) since 2008.This appointment is effective immediately.
