May-June 2005

Message from Ian E. Wilson

In this first issue of the e-Newsletter, I would like to bring you up to date on the renewal of the Library and Archives Canada (LAC) grants and contributions program.

Working closely with the Canadian Council of Archives (CCA), we are preparing the renewal of authority that enables LAC to provide grants and contributions to support archival projects. Following the national consultations held in autumn 2004, Andrée Delagrave, Assistant Deputy Minister, Transformation, Sean Berrigan, Director General, Strategic Office, and Marianne McLean, Senior Policy Officer, Strategic Office, have met on a monthly basis with the Board of Directors of the CCA.

The National Archival Development Programme will support the Canadian Council of Archives and archival organizations in building strategic and developmental capacity. It will focus on preservation and broadening awareness and use of archival materials. It will support improved access by continuing to build the national catalogue and will work to ensure the greater relevance of archival holdings to Aboriginal and under-represented ethno-cultural groups.

Library and Archives Canada looks forward to continuing its support to the development of archival capacity in Canada so as to increase the accessibility of the national archival record.

I am convinced that, together, we will succeed in reaching our goals. In the coming months, I will keep you informed of new developments and provide you with progress reports.
