The Virtual Gramophone

A multiphase project, The Virtual Gramophone has been developing since 1998. Created with the help of the Canadian Culture Online Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage, the site includes a database of Canadian images and digital audio recordings, biographies of musicians as well as the historical background of recorded sound and music in Canada.

In April 2005, Library and Archives Canada announced the completion of the most recent phase of The Virtual Gramophone, which continues its retrospective of classical music. A total of 17 new biographies including those of Sarah Fischer and Hubert Eisdell, 1,780 new entries, 300 new audio files and a new section on the history of opera in Canada have been added to the site. The Virtual Gramophone now features over 12,000 titles in its database and has over 4,200 complete recordings available for download. Audio files are available in RealAudio and MP3 formats.

We are also very pleased to recognize the exceptional work of Gilles St-Laurent, Audio Conservator at Library and Archives Canada. His work in digitizing and enhancing our collection of 78-rpm discs for The Virtual Gramophone site has earned him the prestigious CEDAR Award. Based in Cambridge, England, the CEDAR Award recognizes excellence in audio restoration. It is the second time that Mr. St-Laurent has received this award.

This engaging multimedia site will familiarize you with popular music from the 1900s. Enjoy hours of listening pleasure!
