DOXA

Library and Archives Canada was the presenting partner at the DOXA Documentary Film and Video Festival. On May 24, the Festival began with a speech by Ian E. Wilson, Librarian and Archivist of Canada, and was followed by the screening of Continuous Journey by filmmaker Ali Kazimi. Produced after eight years of research and with the help of many archival records, this film transports us back to 1914 and retells a tragic event in Canada's immigration history. A must-see film!

On Friday, May 27, Andris Kesteris, Senior Project Manager of Film and Broadcasting at Library and Archives Canada, participated in a forum on the role of archives in the production of documentary films and videos. Ali Kazimi and Colin Browne, writer, filmmaker and professor at Simon Fraser University, also took part in this meeting of experts.

Following the forum, Library and Archives Canada launched a website entitled Virtual Silver Screen at Pacific Cinémathèque. Created by Library and Archives Canada and implemented with the help of the Canadian Culture Online Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage, the site features rare films dating back to the early 20th century. Films including The Most Picturesque Spot in North America (1918), Vimy Ridge (1917), The Great Toronto Fire (1904) and more than 20 others are now available in their entirety to Internet users. Virtual Silver Screen, see it for yourself!
