Norman Horrocks, O.C.

 

Library and Archives Canada congratulates Dr. Norman Horrocks on his recent appointment as an Officer of the Order of Canada. Established in 1967, the Order of Canada is our country's highest honour for outstanding lifetime achievement.

Professor Emeritus and Adjunct Professor at the School of Information Management, Dalhousie University, Dr. Horrocks is one of our country's foremost champions of librarianship. He has worked in libraries in England, Cyprus and Australia and has been a respected teacher in Australia, the United States and Canada. As Director of the School of Library and Information Studies and Dean of the Faculty of Management at Dalhousie University, he demonstrated a deep commitment to the profession.

 

Dr. Horrocks has received more than 20 prestigious awards and distinctions including the Canadian Library Association Outstanding Service to Librarianship Award in 1995 and his election as an Honorary Member of the American Library Association in 2004. In 2003, The Nova Scotia Library Association established the Norman Horrocks Award for Library Leadership to be awarded annually "for distinguished contributions to the promotion and development of library service in Nova Scotia."

A mentor to thousands of librarians in Canada and around the world, Dr. Horrocks shows keen and sincere interest in developing and nurturing those who wish to contribute to the field and to society. Through presentations and lectures, publications and ongoing participation in major library associations, he continues to provide expert advice and sage counsel in the areas of librarianship, education, publishing and the humanities.
