Upcoming Virtual Exhibitions

This summer, Library and Archives Canada (LAC) is launching a number of new websites featuring virtual exhibitions and digitized collections. From cookbooks to hockey to city directories, these new sites present an eclectic mix of topics sure to pique your interest.

In the first e-Newsletter, subscribers were asked which topics they would like to read about in future issues. Most readers wanted to hear more about upcoming virtual exhibitions at LAC. So, here is a look at some of the new and updated sites soon to be launched.

Bon appétit! A Celebration of Canadian Cookbooks explores the evolution of cooking in Canada. From topics such as the foods of Canada's Indigenous peoples, to the culinary traditions of early settlers, the coming of science to the kitchen in the 20th century, and the multicultural menus of today, Bon appétit! is sure to appeal to anyone who enjoys cooking and good food. The site includes two fully searchable 19th-century cookbooks, as well as appetizing resources for students and teachers. www.collectionscanada.ca/cuisine/index-e.html

Canadian Directories features a digitized selection of directories drawn from LAC's rich collection of Canadian national, provincial/territorial, county and city directories dating back to the 19th and early 20th centuries. Working in coordination with other national projects and partners such as Our Roots and the Bibliothèque nationale du Québec, LAC has expanded the existing site. Genealogists will love the 80 new directories--focussing on the regions of Ottawa and Halifax--which add 50,000 searchable pages of information. www.collectionscanada.ca/canadiandirectories/index-e.html

Backcheck: A Hockey Retrospective traces the development of Canada's national winter sport. Sure to be popular with hockey researchers and the general public alike, this summer's update adds new articles to the "Great Hockey Stories" database, and explores what hockey means abroad and within Canada's Aboriginal communities. Best of all, a new section on the origins of hockey answers once and for all the question of hockey's birthplace! www.collectionscanada.ca/hockey/index-e.html

These are just some of the new virtual exhibitions and digitized collections Library and Archives Canada is adding to its website this summer. Visit them at www.collectionscanada.ca/index-e.html!
