Summertime . . . and the Readin' is Easy

Canadian kids have lots of good reasons to visit their local libraries this summer--not the least of which is the TD Summer Reading Club 2005.

For the second consecutive year, Library and Archives Canada (LAC) is proud to join program sponsor TD Bank Financial Group to foster literacy skills among children and keep them reading all summer long.

"As a national knowledge institution, we are proud to lend our expertise and support to coordinating this unique program," said Ian E. Wilson, Librarian and Archivist of Canada. "The TD Summer Reading Club relies on librarians' dynamic talents and the participation of local public libraries to encourage children to pick up good reading habits during the summer holidays."

The Toronto Public Library started the Reading Club in 1994, and continues to create its program materials. The participation of LAC has enabled the program to expand beyond Ontario, to public libraries in seven provinces and all three territories. LAC also hosts the program's website and coordinates the distribution of materials with provincial and territorial departments and associations.

Through a variety of games, crafts and stories, the TD Summer Reading Club offers children a structured reading environment and rewards their personal achievements. This year's theme, Blast Off!, features space exploration and is expected to attract 400,000 English and French-speaking children.

Children who register at their local public library receive a colourful kit that includes a poster, stickers and a logbook to keep track of the books they read. They can also collect Astro Cards provided by the Canadian Space Agency. Lively graphics on the program materials were created by award-winning artist Ange Zhang.
