A Wish for Peace

With the start of a new school year, Library and Archives Canada is publishing A Wish for Peace, this year's edition of Read Up On It, which celebrates the Year of the Veteran and the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War by presenting a list of Canadian children's books devoted to peace, war and the outcomes of the many conflicts that have shaken human history.

Read Up On It is a bilingual publication that consists of a booklet, together with bookmarks and a colour poster. The booklet is a list of Canadian children's books, detailed annotations for each of the books, as well as a bibliography, a biography and an interview with this year's illustrator Ron Lightburn, whose artwork graces the cover. The Canadian National Institute for the Blind and the Institut Nazareth et Louis-Braille assisted with the selection of children's books in alternate formats.

With a print run of approximately 40,000 copies, the publication has been distributed free of charge since 1988 to teachers, librarians and everyone who is interested in books for children and youth. Various themes have been covered over the years, ranging from poetry and multiculturalism to magic; these earlier publications, as well as information about award-winning children's books both in Canada and abroad, are available in the online version of Read Up On It at: www.collectionscanada.ca/read-up-on-it/index-e.html
