Service Delivery Improvements at Library and Archives Canada

Library and Archives Canada (LAC) is implementing several initiatives to improve the delivery of its services.

In recent months, LAC has been working to resolve a backlog in processing applications filed under the Access to Information Act and Privacy Act. Steps have been taken to ensure that statutory deadlines are met for processing such applications in the future.

A self-serve digital copying pilot project, in effect from November 1, 2005 to April 30, 2006, will enable clients to use their own photographic equipment (digital and film cameras) and LAC microform printers and scanners to copy certain documents in the collection, for the purposes of research or private study. The pilot project will help LAC assess the possibility of offering this service permanently. In addition, a new form will soon be available online for ordering copies of textual, photographic, cartographic and architectural records, as well as works of art.

In the coming months, a powerful new search engine will enable clients to search the LAC website and existing databases, which contain large parts of the published and unpublished documentary heritage in the LAC collection.

In December 2005, clients will have access to free wireless Internet service in the reference rooms and consultation rooms at 395 Wellington Street in Ottawa. This service allows clients to use their own laptops to gain direct access to the vast resources of the Internet and LAC website.

LAC is also working to integrate web pages on how it delivers services to the public. By January 2006, clients will have access to updated information, ranging from research preparation tips to hours of operation.

Lastly, a survey is under way to measure client satisfaction of LAC services provided at 395 Wellington Street. The survey, which ends December 10, 2005, will help identify areas needing improvements.
