Books, the Greatest Heroes of Them All!

School is out and it's time to get a move on to the library! The TD Summer Reading Club has lots in store for young readers; this year, its theme is "Quest for Heroes." Based on the success of the 2005 program, we expect at least 400,000 young people across Canada to get involved in the various activities.

For three years now, Library and Archives Canada has contributed to this Canada-wide summer reading program, which encourages children, ages 6 through 12, to read during their summer holidays and to open their world to the joys of reading. The Club motivates the children by providing them with a structured, interactive and highly entertaining reading environment. Books are incorporated into a set of games, stories and crafts, offering a delightful and unexpected playful dimension to the program. Children receive a reading kit, a poster, stickers and a logbook to keep track of the books they have read when they enrol in the Club or get involved in the complementary activities at the public library.

Research shows that young people who read during their summer holidays maintain and even improve their reading skills, making the adjustment to school in the fall easier for them and their teachers, too.

The TD Summer Reading Club is sponsored by the TD Bank Financial Group, in collaboration with the Toronto Public Library, which designs and creates the program materials. Library and Archives Canada distributes and implements the program for free through Canadian public library networks. That means 450 public libraries and their 2,500 branches contribute to child literacy!
