Moving Here, Staying Here: The Canadian Immigrant Experience

The fascinating story of immigration to Canada from the early 19th century to the outbreak of the Second World War is recounted in Moving Here, Staying Here. Using Government of Canada records, manuscripts and published material, this exhibition documents the experiences of immigrants as well as public views on immigration. Learn about the challenges of immigration and explore your family's history through databases of digitized documents.

Made in Canada: Patents of Invention and the Story of Canadian Innovation

Presented in partnership with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, Made in Canada highlights Canadian ingenuity. This site describes a selection of Canadian patents dating from 1869 to 1894, through such themes as Agriculture; Canada and War; Communication; and Gadgets and Things for Everyday Life. Patents for the electric stove, the snowplow and the world's first light bulb are featured among others. In addition, there is a searchable database of scanned patents dating from the first 25 years of the Patent Office.

Aboriginal Documentary Heritage: Historical Collections of the Canadian Government

Showcasing federal government records held by Library and Archives Canada, Aboriginal Documentary Heritage illustrates the relationship between the Canadian government and Canada's Aboriginal peoples over the last 250 years. The exhibition presents three sections: the Red and Black Series (the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs' administrative records of Aboriginal people from 1872 to the 1950s); Treaties, Surrenders and Agreements; and Aboriginal Soldiers and the First World War. A total of 524 treaties and agreements, and 100 microfilm reels of historical documents are available for viewing.
