Resources for Librarians

Since the Internet was first developed, librarians have used their professional skills to select the best online material for various subjects. The web pages below represent the efforts of various librarians to collect the very best Internet resources in the field of librarianship -- material such as readers advisory booklists, directories of publishers, ready reference websites, collections of library policies, and listservs or newsgroups for professional discussion. If you can't find what you're looking for through one of these sites, it's probably not on the Internet yet.

Note: The links on this page will take you away from LibraryNet; you may wish to bookmark this site first.

Librarianship in General

Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library's Business Room
The Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library (PARL) has created a guide for small and medium-sized libraries that draws on PARL's experience in creating a locally oriented business information service. Increasingly, libraries are being recognized as economic catalysts and resource centres, and PARL has responded by creating this service and producing a guide, which presents valuable information on partnership creation, service design, and collection development. The guide also includes staff training modules, role-playing scenarios and sample surveys.
BUBL Information Service
Originally aimed at academic libraries in the UK, this site has now become a service for the higher education community in general, but maintains a Library and Information Science section which gathers references on subjects from digital library standards to rare books.
Digital Librarian
A librarian's choice of the best online resources, organized by topic or searchable by keyword. Most of the entries are briefly annotated.
Internet Library for Librarians
This "one-stop shopping center for librarians to locate Internet resources related to their profession," is maintained by Vianne Tang Sha, a librarian at University of Missouri-Columbia and provides links to Internet sites ranging from general ready reference to specific aspects of librarianship. All the resources have been reviewed and are briefly described. Not searchable, but divided into categories.
Librarians Index to the Internet
Maintained by librarians at the University of California, Berkeley. Set up somewhat like Yahoo, this directory can be browsed by category or searched using keywords. Excellent annotations tell you what you will find at each site. Extremely selective; only the best sites make it on to this index.
LibraryLand
A focused search engine which allows you to search the contents of thousands of web documents at major sites dedicated to the practice of librarianship. Organized into broad subject categories, with many "see-also" references.
Library-Oriented Lists and Electronic Serials
Includes mailing lists, newsgroups, and on-line periodicals of interest to library professionals and/or staff. You can browse by subject or title, or search by keyword. Based on the original work of Charles W. Bailey, Jr. at the University of Houston Libraries, now compiled by Wei Wu at the same institution.
PICK
Subtitled: "quality Internet resources in library and information science, selected by Thomas Parry Library" (of the University of Wales). Rather unusually, this site collects citations to relevant articles and books as well as links to Internet material.
Project EARL
Project EARL (Electronic Access to Resources in Libraries) is the first UK national public libraries Internet initiative and aims to become "the essential practical resource for public libraries in the UK." EARLweb brings together Internet links with a British and/or European perspective, but many of the resources are useful to librarians anywhere.

Canadiana

Canadian Information by Subject [Bilingual]
The National Library's guide to Canadian information on the Internet, arranged by DDC subject headings.
Canadian Government Information on the Internet
This amazing resource, created by Anita Cannon (Reference/Public Services Librarian, Mount Allison University), is now maintained by the governments' Depository Services Program. It brings together all Canadian government information available for public access through the Internet, including federal, provincial, and municipal sources. As comprehensive as possible and revised regularly.
Canadian Library Gateway
A one-stop shop for Canadian library information, the Gateway provides access to Canadian library catalogues, Canadian library interlending and charging policies, the directory of Canadian Z39.50 targets, the Directory of Special Collections of Research Value held in Canadian Libraries, Canadian library Web sites, and other Web sites of interest. The virtual Canadian union catalogue (vCuc) is an integral component of the Gateway, allowing users to either simultaneously or individually search 23 databases representing the holdings of more than 90 libraries.
Librarians' Bookmarks
From the librarians at Okanagan University College (BC). Although not annotated, this directory's emphasis on Canadian content makes it useful.
QTECH
A site devoted to "provid[ing] a comprehensive range of resources to the technical services community" with a good deal of Canadian content. Maintained by the technical services department at Queen's University Libraries.

Canadian Library Directories

Canadian Libraries and Library Catalogues [Bilingual]
Maintained by the National Library, this is a nearly exhaustive list of Canadian libraries of all types with a presence on the World Wide Web, organized by province and by type of library.
Libdex
This worldwide directory, maintained by Peter Scott, includes all regions of Canada and is a wonderful complement to the National Library list above. If the Canadian library you are looking for is not on one of these lists, it probably doesn't have a web page (yet).

Libweb: Library Servers via WWW
This searchable directory, maintained at the UC Berkeley Digital Library, lists web pages from libraries all over the world by continent and country. (The American listings are further sub-divided by type of library.) Also helpful are the links to other, more limited-scope library directories.
Public Libraries of Europe
Maintained by Sheila and Robert Harden, this site is organized by country, but not searchable. It includes links to the national library and/or library organization of each country, wherever applicable.
