on World Wide Web

As of June, the National Library of Canada has been offering services on the World Wide Web. National Library information is now available via a hypertext, multimedia, distributed system that runs on the Internet. The Uniform Resource Locator (URL) of this new Web service is http://www.nlc-bnc.ca/ehome.htm

The National Library's Web service includes, for example, the Library's fall publications, descriptions of its collections and services, cultural events and exhibitions, and pointers to other Canadian Internet information resources. The Library's Web service will continue to be enhanced.

Library staff are developing a "Virtual Tour" of the Library. Adapted versions of other National Library projects, such as Read Up On It 1994, the Canadian Literature Research Service reading lists, and the current exhibition on Canadian science fiction and fantasy, are being made accessible on the Web.

This new WWW service demonstrates the National Library's commitment to the Information Highway. "Our long-term objective is to provide electronic access to a much greater volume of Canadian material, both in Canada and around the world," explains National Librarian Marianne Scott. "We are determined to make a significant contribution to the development of electronic access to information in Canada."

In March of this year, the National Library participated in a week-long demonstration of an "electronic library" project by working with the Library of Congress and two schools in Canada and the United States. The schools were able to access information on Canada's Confederation and the U.S. Civil War through Internet links to both libraries. Information made accessible through this project will also be available in National Library News and on the WWW shortly.
