National Library News

October 1995, vol. 27, no. 10

DID YOU KNOW...

that more Canadian publications are being printed on alkaline paper? Recently, the National Library tested the acidity of current, non-government, Canadian monographs published in 1994 and 1995 and received by the Library. A total of 1 125 titles were tested, of which 1 014, or 90 percent, were alkaline. Staff recorded that 42 of the 111 acidic items, or 38 percent, could not be put through Wei T'o mass deacidification because of the plastic content of the binding.

Though tests to determine if the books were printed on permanent paper were not carried out, it seems that the campaign to use non-acidic paper for publishing, a campaign in which the National Library has played a notable part over the past several years, is proving its worth.
