National Library of Canada Makes Music Publishing Easier Than Ever

The National Library of Canada will now assign International Standard Music Numbers (ISMN) to any Canadian publisher of printed music.

The ISMN, which is similar in structure and purpose to the International Standard Book Number (ISBN), is used exclusively for easy numerical identification of printed music. Publishers have been using this number in countries such as Germany, Great Britain and France, to identify musical works. The United States will soon adopt the same system.

National Librarian Marianne Scott is pleased with this new service. "Because the ISMN includes a unique publisher identification number, all the works of any particular publisher can be readily identified. That's great news for librarians, publishers and musicians!"

The use of this number on printed music will assist publishers, librarians, and retailers to identify, track, order, control inventories, and process the sale of all forms of printed music.
