The National Library recently announced the third installment of funds that will enable publishers to make eighteen Canadian books available in large print, including Friend of My Youth by Alice Munro, Jake and the Kid by W.O. Mitchell and Women of Influence by Bonnie Burnard.
Under its Large Print Publishing Program, the National Library of Canada will provide a total of $106 500.00 in financial assistance to eight Canadian publishers. Publishers will receive matching contributions of up to $15 000.00 per book to publish works by Canadian authors in large print.
Since the Program was launched in 1993, the National Library has announced contributions worth $315 000.00 for 15 publishers to publish 58 Canadian works. This National Library initiative is part of the federal government's National Strategy for the Integration of Persons with Disabilities.
“The National Library is delighted to help make Canadian works available to those who cannot read conventional print,” said National Librarian Marianne Scott. “We see this initiative as an important means of promoting equitable access to our published heritage.”
The eighteen books to be published in large print (see list) were chosen from among 22 works proposed by Canadian publishers. The selection jury consisted of Thomas Déri, Past President of the Salon du livre de Montréal; Louise Guillemette-Labory, Director of Recreation and Culture for Ville d'Anjou, Quebec, and member of the National Library Advisory Board; Arden Ford, Business Manager at McGill-Queen's University Press; and Arlene Chan, Head of the Toronto Public Library's Travelling Branch.
