Services of the National Library of Canada

The National Library of Canada, located at 395 Wellington Street in Ottawa, is home to Canada's published heritage. The National Library's main role is to acquire, preserve and promote the most comprehensive collection of Canadiana for ALL Canadians, now and in the years to come. The Library holds materials such as books, periodicals, sound recordings, manuscripts, and electronic formats. Notable strengths include Canadian newspapers, Canadian city directories, rare books, music, literary manuscripts and Canadian literature for children and for adults.

The National Library of Canada offers a wide variety of services to researchers, librarians, publishers, government agencies and the general public. For example, a teacher responsible for selecting children's books for her class may find assistance in bibliographies provided by the National Library's Canadian Literature Research Service. Librarians can learn how to improve their services for disabled clients by contacting the Library. The Library offers a reference service that is well equipped to handle a wide range of enquiries. An interlibrary loan service assists other libraries trying to locate items not in their own holdings. Publishers can benefit from the pre-publicity generated by the Cataloguing in Publication program.
