CONFERENCE WORKSHOP TO FOCUS ON SPECIFIC ABORIGINAL
STATUS OF THE ARTI ST ISSUES
Ottawa , October 29 th , 2004 - The Canadian Conference of the Arts is pleased to announce a special initiative with the Aboriginal arts community, in conjunction with its national policy conference, From Act to Action: Moving Forward on Status of the Artist , taking place in Regina , Saskatchewan , on 19 and 20 November 2004 .
The conference will feature a special workshop on Aboriginal artists' issues as they relate to Status of the Artist, issues such as copyright and protection of community interests, concerns relating to access (for training, funding, opportunities), and development of a national arts service organization for Aboriginal artists. The initial idea for this workshop came from Saskatchewan native artist, and former CCA board member, Bob Boyer, whose sudden demise at the beginning of September was a shock to the community.
This workshop is one of four simultaneous discussion groups to take place on the Saturday afternoon; thanks to support from the Aboriginal Arts Secretariat of the Canada Council for the Arts, a certain number of travel and accommodation bursaries are available for Aboriginal artists or representatives of Aboriginal groups to attend CCA's conference. The workshop will be facilitated by Greg Young-Ing. Greg is currently Chair of the Indigenous Peoples Caucus of the Creators' Rights Alliance, and is the former Managing Editor of Theytus Books, the first Aboriginal publishing house in Canada ; he's also a writer, poet and teacher, and a member of Opsakwayak Cree Nation in Northern Manitoba .
There Is Still Time To Book, But Don't Leave It To The Last Minute!
To accommodate applications for the Aboriginal workshop, CCA is extending the deadline for all registrations to the conference until Monday 8 November . We will not be able to guarantee attendance after that date. A few hotel rooms remain; ensure you quote “CCA conference” when making your booking as all other rooms at the Hotel Saskatchewan Radisson Plaza are now booked!
