Newcap Creates PSAs, and News Items to Promote 60th Anniversary of the UN Declaration of Human Rights
Mike Keller was so inspired by a few words in a letter to his employer, Newcap Broadcasting, that he convinced management to support the creation of PSAs and TV items to explain the importance of marking December 10, 2008 as the 60th anniversary of the passage of the human rights declaration. The letter, from the Canadian Human Rights Commission, said the declaration recognizes “human rights as the foundation of peace, justice, and freedom in the world.” Newcap worked with the Commission to produce two PSAs that aired this week, with each of the company’s 70 radio stations providing airtime at no charge. The company’s two Alberta TV stations produced news items which aired on December 10, and many of the radio and TV facilities will be displaying copies of the Canadian Charter of Rights. Mr. Keller concludes that, “We live in a great country and in our business, I feel we have a responsibility to reinforce that whenever we can.”

CAB Members Lead Hospital Fundraiser
Bruyère Continuing Care’s fifth annual 580 CFRA Hope, Spirit and Dignity Radiothon event takes place today, raising money for renovating the Geriatric Day Hospital, refurbishing the rehabilitation unit, and programs at the Élisabeth Bruyère Research Institute. The fundraising drive, launched last week at Élisabeth Bruyère Hospital, included an announcement that two new media partners, Rock Détente and Le Droit, are now on board, along with 580 CFRA, CTV Ottawa, and the Ottawa Citizen. Having full media coverage on television, radio and print in both official languages reflects the hospital’s roots in the community and serves as a fitting tribute to founder Mother Élisabeth Bruyère. CAB Members’ Corporate Social Responsibility Survey
Great stories are arriving every day at the CAB as members have begun providing details on their community service work during 2006-07. Members are responding to an email survey from the CAB that asks for details on the many ways private broadcasters provide assistance – both monetary and non-monetary – to worthy causes and events across the country. Newcap radio stations in Alberta, for instance, reported a donation of $12,000 to Whitecourt Community Band Association to help them buy musical instruments. And CKVM in Ville-Marie (QC) supported the fight against cancer, the Chevaliers de Colomb and the Guignolée des médias. We want to hear great stories from all CAB members, so we’re asking everyone to complete and return the survey, which was sent via Bytown Consulting, by late July.
