Celebrating Excellence
CAB Finalists for 2008 Gold Ribbon Awards

Ottawa, October 3, 2008 – The Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) today announced the finalists for the prestigious Gold Ribbon Awards, honouring excellence in private broadcasting. The awards will be presented during the CAB 2008 Convention being held in Ottawa from November 2nd to 4th. The list of 2008 finalists follows.

The Gold Ribbon Awards honour achievement in broadcasting in such categories as community service, breaking news, humour, public affairs, and diversity in news and information programming. The CAB received a total of 403 submissions for this year’s competition. Radio categories attracted 202 submissions, while TV and Specialty/Pay/Pay-per-view entries garnered 108 and 93 submissions respectively. After reviewing the entries, the judges selected 144 finalists in 33 categories.

“The high calibre of entries submitted once again this year is another testament to the uniquely Canadian media content private broadcasters deliver by informing, entertaining and connecting with communities that are increasingly diverse across Canada,” said Glenn O’Farrell, President and CEO of the CAB. “Congratulations to all nominees on upholding a standard of excellence that has become a defining feature of these awards.”

“It was a difficult task to select nominees from among the many fine entries we screened,” said Steve Gamester, Chair of the Gold Ribbon Awards Judging Panel for the Television and Specialty/Pay/PPV services categories. “But it was both challenging and rewarding to choose the best work from among submissions that all speak to the outstanding level of commitment of Canada’s private broadcasting system to deliver quality programming,” he added.

“We all remarked on the fact that everyone participating demonstrated a pursuit of excellence along with enthusiastic involvement in community, whether serving a small, medium or large market,” said Gayle Zarbatany, Chair of the Gold Ribbon Awards Judging Panel for Radio categories.

CAB 2008 Convention features an engaging, dynamic lineup of sessions and speakers, all informed by this year’s theme, The World View. For more on the program or speakers, or information on registering online, visit our new website, www.cab-convention.ca.

The Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) is the national voice of Canada’s private broadcasters, representing the vast majority of Canadian programming services, including private radio and television stations, networks, specialty, pay and pay-per-view services. The goal of the CAB is to represent and advance the interests of Canada’s private broadcasters in the social, cultural and economic fabric of the country.
