“If anyone wants to understand Canadian history they have to understand the role of the Metis in western Canada, the role of the Metis in entering the province of Manitoba into Confederation in 1870.

“In one school division you might have First Nations People, Icelanders, Polish people, Ukranian, Italian, Metis, all together under one school roof. That’s the cultural mosaic of Manitoba.

“The purpose of cultural events [in Manitoba] is to promote a cultural mosaic with each culture defining themselves and relating to others on a cultural basis, interacting with each other, visiting each other, sharing their culture with each other. This is happening in Manitoba and Metis are part of that.

“We do have a Multicultural Act in the province of Manitoba.”
