Historian Toronto Jewish Folk Choir
Former University of Toronto Professor Dr. Ben Shek is chair of the artistic committee for the Toronto Jewish Choir. Founded in 1925 by Jewish immigrant workers, the choir continues to highlight and reflect the multicultural nature of Canada.
Le Dr Ben Shek, ancien professeur à l’université de Toronto, est président du comité artistique de la Toronto Jewish Choir. Fondée en 1925 par des immigrants juifs, cette chorale met en valeur, par son travail, la nature multiculturelle du Canada.

“We sing in Spanish, Italian, French, Ukrainian and Russian songs. We sing in Hebrew. We've always stress Yiddish, we also have an international component.

“Paul Robeson, the great Black singer from the United States. Actor, singer, internationally renown, [he] came numerous times to sing with our choir.

“We were reflecting the multicultural nature of Canada before the term was created.

“As a country with people from many backgrounds, I think Canada
benefitted a great deal from the Toronto Jewish Folk Choir.”
