The "five minutes conversation" refers to using a telephone; the "message of twenty words" refers to a telegram (written message sent by telegraph). The same pole line served both purposes; the circuit between towns was switched back and forth between the telegraph and the telephone equipment, depending on what the customer of the moment wanted. This kind of overlapping use of the same overhead circuit, for either telegraph (the original technology) or telephone (the newer technology) was often a feature of the 1880s and 1890s, when the telephone was first coming into use.
