interviewing Canadian Ambassador to
Afghanistan, William Crosbie.

On February 15, Canadian Ambassador to Afghanistan William Crosbie visited Shamshad TV, an Afghan television station located in Kabul. Shamshad TV broadcasts daily in Pashto and Dari.  Its programming is wide-ranging, offering local and international news, sports, movies, music, children’s programming and entertainment shows.

Nationally, Shamshad TV reaches Kandahar, Jalalabad and Kabul, along with other provinces in Afghanistan. Internationally, it also covers Central Asia, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand through Asia SAT

On location, the Ambassador conducted a 30 minute wide-ranging interview, covering Canada’s engagement in Afghanistan, the recent London Conference and the security situation. The interview was led by Nasim Pashtoon, Head of News for Shamshad TV.

Ambassador Crosbie also toured the facilities with Shamshad TV’s owner and operator, Engineer Fazel Karim, during which the two exchanged views on the challenges and successes of the burgeoning Afghan media scene and also discussed the impressive display of various military aircraft and memorabilia displayed throughout the compound.

On site, the Ambassador also visited the OMAR mine museum, which contains 51 of the 53 types of land mines used in Afghanistan over the years. Founded in 1990, the Organisation for Mine Clearance & Afghan Rehabilitation (OMAR) is one of the most experienced mine clearance NGOs operating in Afghanistan.

OMAR conducts mine clearance, explosive ordinance disposal and mine awareness building in various parts of the country with bases in Kabul, Jalalabad, Kandahar and Herat. Employing 645 Afghan staff, the organisation has cleared millions of square metres of land using a combination of manual clearance teams, battle area clearance teams and mechanical support.
