About the Simcoe Family Fonds
The Simcoe Family papers (F47) held by the Archives of Ontario consist of 4.5 m. of textual records, 100 maps, 595 drawings and watercolours, and 3 photographs from 1665 - ca.1950.
The collection documents the lives of several members of the Simcoe family in the United Kingdom and Canada. They have been divided into sections relating to the work of John Graves Simcoe, Elizabeth Posthuma (nee Gwillim) Simcoe, their son Francis Gwillim Simcoe, the eldest daughter, Eliza Simcoe and various other members of their extended family.
John Graves Simcoe - Records in the collection document his service in the British army in North America and England, his unofficial pursuits as a land-owner, and his five years as the first Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada. Included are official correspondence and letterbooks, official orders and papers, military appointments and personal papers.
Elizabeth Posthuma Simcoe - Elizabeth Simcoe's activities are documented through a number of her personal diaries and correspondence with relatives and friends. Mrs. Simcoe's skills as an artist and draft person are well documented in 595 drawings and watercolours.
Francis Gwillim Simcoe - Francis Simcoe, son of John Graves and Elizabeth Simcoe, was born in 1791 and accompanied his parents to Upper Canada. He played an active role in the British army and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1809. His military career was short lived, as he was fatally wounded in 1812. The collection includes his journal and correspondence from 1809-1812 which documents his military service.
Eliza Simcoe - Daughter of John Graves and Elizabeth Simcoe, Eliza resided at Wolford Lodge, the family estate, and took an active part in the promotion of the careers of other members of the family. She also worked to preserve the papers of her parents and may have been responsible for the arrangement of her mother's sketches into binders and scrap books. The collection includes her correspondence to friends and relatives from 1830-1893.
The collection also includes a small amount of material from other Simcoe family members.
How to Access the records: Elizabeth Simcoe's sketches and watercolours will be available on the Archives of Ontario's Visual Database by August 2002. Other records from the Simcoe family papers must be consulted at the Archives of Ontario.
