Settlements

In present times it is easy to forget that the nomadic Ojibwe ever wandered the Mississagi Valley. Their lifestyle was so unobtrusive that no obvious signs remain of their presence.

However it is known that the Ojibwe spent their winters in the forests north of Lake Huron. In the summer they would travel down the Mississagi and other rivers in order to reach Lake Huron where they would spend the summer.

The arrival of the French in the seventeenth century did not immediately upset the rhythm of native life. However, the fur trade effectively altered the native economy. This changed their lifestyle irrevocably.
