Construction of Aubrey Falls Dam

Aubrey Falls was the third dam to be built on the Mississagi River. Construction began in 1966 when 20 men built a camp near the site, which housed more than 100 men by January 1, 1967. Local labour was used a great deal in the construction of the camp. There was also another camp at the Chub Lake site that was shared with the workers from the Wells project.

Clearing the area that needed to be flooded was not a difficult task, most of it was burned in the Mississagi Fire of 1948, which left little timber that was of value. Also there were no homes located in the flooded area, this saved much time.

When the camp area was finished for Aubrey, workers began clearing the area for construction and building new roads. During 1967, most of the rock was excavated in the areas of the power house, main dam, and diversion channel. After excavation was completed the workers began to pour the concrete. The Trolling Lake, (Aubrey), dam was under construction in 1967, and was completed the following year. It is 100 feet in height and 1000 feet long.

During the fall of 1968 the work force reached a maximum of 1,115 men. Together, these men toughed it out and the generating station was in service late in 1969.

Throughout construction, 76 000 cubic meters of concrete was poured and placed for the main structures and another 535 000 cubic meters of rock fill was used for the sluiceway dam.

The Aubrey station was built as an automatic plant worked by remote control. The construction was completed and was in service on November 4, 1969, when many of the workers left the area in search of new jobs. The estimated cost of the project at the time was $35 million.
