The Red Rock generating station was the second dam constructed on the Mississagi River. When Rayner was first built in 1950, it provided all of the power that was necessary to the Mississagi River Valley and surrounding area. But as time changed more demand for power was noticed, and when uranium was discovered in Elliot Lake in the 1960's more power was needed to run the mines. Southern Ontario began distributing power to the north to take care of this problem, but almost immediately the plans for a new dam went into effect. This dam was to be the Red Rock Generating Station.

The Red Rock Generating Station is located about 10 km, north west of Iron Bridge along Highway 546. Red Rock could have been built in three possible places, one being the current location, another upstream at Slate Falls, and another at Shino Rapids. After much discussion and some research they decided that it would be built at the Red Rock site. The strong current from Slate Falls would feed the dam perfectly, and downstream from Red Rock, the Shino Rapids provided an area that was already accustomed to rough waters for the release of dammed water.
