Camp and Surrounding Area

During the earliest stages of construction for Aubrey Falls, and Wells Generating Stations it was decided that the camp for the workers would not be located so far north at the building site for Aubrey. Ontario Hydro leased about 93 acres of Crown land from the Department of Lands and Forests and decided to make the camp approximately in the middle. The area of land that they leased was a small peninsula located

on Chub Lake and Jobammageeshig Lake. Soon it was developed into a town site to provide living quarters for the men that were involved in the building of Aubrey Falls and Wells generating station power development projects. This land was no cheap buy, being prime recreation land surrounded on three sides by water and lined with some of the finest beaches in the area. After the dams were completed there were strong objections from the tourist operators and the cottagers who were situated on both of the lakes near the town site. Due to all of the protests, Ontario Hydro was forced to abandon the site and return the land to the Crown. All of the buildings were removed, but the underground water and sewage facilities still remain on the site, as well as the roads and the parking areas. The town site still remains today, and can be located near the Outpost Lodge on Highway 129 north of Thessalon.
