Aubrey Falls Trading Post, which is located about 90 kilometres north of Wharncliffe, was started by Marian (Wersch) and Mel Allen in 1961. Mel passed away in 1963, and Marian ran the business by herself. During the time that she ran the business, she had people working for her, as she had to take care of the place and her two children. In 1968, the store burnt down. Marian was wakened by the gun shells from the store going off in the fire. As they had no fire department, Marian, her two children and their help had to run up and down the hill from the lake to the fire with buckets of water. As they'd had, of course, no time to put on shoes, Marian ended up with several very bad blisters on the bottom of her feet. When Marsha, the eldest of Marian's children, learned that there was a fire, she packed a few things in a suitcase: a blouse that was too small for her, a pajama top but no pajama buttons, and the mug that she had put her tips in from the customers. However, she had dumped the money out on her bed, and put the mug, empty, into the suitcase !! Marian ran the business for another few years before selling it to Paul Piper. Paul Piper owned Aubrey Falls for about 10 years, and then sold it to Barry Beckett. Since he bought it, Barry has made several changes. He tore down some cabins, built some more and remodelled the place. He also added propane, a campground and an outpost cabin. Mr. Beckett is still running the business today. |
