Old Hemlocks

Hemlocks Camp was built in 1948, by Jane and Bill Gribbens. They rented a team of horses for six weeks at $60 dollars a week, and they cut and hauled lumber to build their seven cabins.

Jane and Bill had the American plan at Hemlocks Camp, which meant that Jane would cook for the guests in the dining lounge. Jane would cook a different dish from a different country each night, and she would wear matching hats. When they ate Mexican food, Jane would wear a type of hat worn by the Mexicans. When they had Chinese food, it would be a kind of hat worn by the Chinese.

The next owners were two couples: Terry and Etta Lees and Dianna Volans and Skip Bezaire. They bought Hemlocks in 1975. In 1979, Hemlocks was bought by Ian Niemi (Gomer). He changed the American Plan to a dining lounge, and introduced the weekly fish-fry. Ian operated Hemlocks Camp until 1986, when it burned down. He is now rebuilding it.
