Hemlock

This tree is also known as Eastern Hemlock, Canada hemlock, common hemlock, hemlock gum tree, hemlock spruce, white hemlock and weeping spruce. Hemlocks grow best in cool, wet rocky areas. Hemlock stands often provide an ideal home for deer in the winter months, because the tree's thickly needled branches keep out most snow. The hemlock usually gets as tall as 63 to 82 feet, the maximum being 49 feet. The oldest hemlock is 988 years old. The hemlock has brown bark, which gets darker as the tree ages, and its long needles are dark green with white undersides. The hemlock's young needles and inner bark can be used as food, but it is only recommended in emergencies as the taste can be rather unpleasant.
