This tree is otherwise known as Arbor Vitae - which means "tree of life" - Northern White cedar and swamp cedar. It was used to cure many ailments, including scurvy, headaches and snow blindness. The white cedar grows best in damp areas, and reaches heights of up to 25 feet. Its needles are different from other evergreens, as they are wider and quite flat. Its bark is usually grey or brown. Pileated woodpeckers and warblers are just two of the birds who enjoy visiting white cedars for the occasional snack. The cedar is known for its perfumey smell.
