The Town of Thessalon

Thessalon is a community which is briefly mentioned in the history of the Mississagi River Valley, but is not in the actual area that this website covers. However, it is still relevant in the history of the Mississagi River Valley. It is located on Hwy. 17 as well, about 20 kilometres south of Wharncliffe, in the township of Thessalon. Thessalon was called "Neyashewun" by the local Natives, but when the French arrived in 1877 they thought it was Tessalon, and the community was called Thessalon Mills, until 1881 when the name was changed to Thessalon. Many lumber mills and logging companies were located in Thessalon, and Thessalon was where many of the local loggers would go to spend their cheques when the holidays came around.
