Barney Danson
Barney Danson enlisted in the Queen’s Own Rifles at the beginning of the war with his close friend, Freddy Harris. They were aware of the threat that Hitler posed, and knew of several families who had been driven out of Germany prior to the outbreak of hostilities. He and Freddy befriended two other young men in the regiment, and the four of them enjoyed one another’s company through basic training. Barney was wounded in August 1944, and returned to Canada some months later. He had a most distinguished political career, serving with the Trudeau government in several capacities, including Minister of Defense. He now lives in Toronto with his wife, Isabel, and published his memoir, NOT BAD FOR A SARGEANT, in the fall of 2002.
