Rabbi Mordecai Langner

Rabbi Mordecai Langner was born in 1897 in Strettin, Poland. The oldest of four children, Rabbi Langner immigrated to Canada in 1924, five years after marrying his wife Anne in 1919. His father was Rabbi Moishe Langner, the Strettiner Rebbe of Toronto and his three brothers were Abraham, Solomon, and Isaac, who all became rabbis as well.

Rabbi Mordecai Langner lived on Maria Street in the Junction and served as rabbi of Congregation Knesseth Israel from 1924 until 1939. He was an Orthodox rabbi who also served as cantor for the Synagogue. After 1939, Rabbi Langner moved out of the Junction and formed a synagogue on College Street. After his passing in 1948 at the age of 51, Mordecai’s wife Anne cared for the College Street synagogue for six more years before finally selling the building.
