“Yom
Kippur” by William Kurelek, 1975.
This
painting is part of the “Jewish Life in Canada” series,
which consists of sixteen paintings that provide historical depictions
of Jewish life in Canada. Kurelek was of Ukranian descent and
grew up in Stonewall, Manitoba. He is regarded as one of the most
successful Canadian artists of his generation. Kurelek died at
age 50 in November 1977. Some of the paintings from this series
can be seen on the Fourth Floor of the Lipa Green Building. UJA
