Life before the deportation

Acadian life prior to the deportation often called upon the collaboration of an entire village whether to construct and repair dykes or to build houses as shown here.

As might be expected this interdependancy fostered a strong sense of community.

Household duties were the exclusive domain of Acadian women. In these one and two-roomed dwellings the women carried on the many chores that assured the family unit its food, clothing and other essentials. Picture

Often abandoned by France, Acadians were forced into an illicit trade with the New Englanders in order to obtain many of the necessary goods they could not produce themselves.

More information on Acadian history and genealogy can be found at the Centre Acadien, Université Sainte-Anne, Church Point, Nova Scotia, Canada.
