Roald Amundsen

Accomplishments:

  • Amundsen's expedition spent 19 months in Gjoa Haven on King William Island making magnetic observations in the vicinity of the North Magnetic Pole
  • Hansen, a member of the party, charted the eastern coast of Victoria Island from Gateshead Island to Cape Nansen
  • in his journey from Peel Sound to Dolphin and Union Strait, Amundsen navigated the last unsailed link in one of the routes of the Northwest Passage

Interesting Facts:

  • Amundsen was also the first person to reach the South Pole in the Antarctic some years later
