Birds and Fish

Sea-birds do not constitute a major part of the Inuit wildlife harvest but a Spring hunt for waterfowl near some communities may involve some marine species. In some areas the Inuit also collect the eggs of eiders and thick-billed murres.

Fish are taken in varying amounts by residents of all Inuit communities. The relative importance of fish differs from place to place, but sometimes they provide a substantial fraction of the available food. Apart from some localized jigging for cod on the sea ice near some communities, the overwhelming majority of fishing effort is directed toward non-marine species or anadromous species such as Arctic char.
