Grizzly Bear


Colour - yellowish brown to black, often with white-tipped hairs

Length - 2.0 to 2.8 metres; shoulder height is 1.2 to 1.5 metres

Shape - face in profile is somewhat concave; hump over shoulders

Behaviour - primarily nocturnal; omnivore, feeding on roots, sprouts, fungi, berries, fish, insects, large and small mammals, carrion; may eat up to 40 kg of food a day and will hide meat it does not finish for later; hibernates beginning in fall for 4-7 months

Distribution - generally solitary, although they may congregate near food sources; female ranges vary from 15 km2 to 200 km2 and are not shared with other females; males range up to 1000-1500 km2

Sensitivity - scientific evidence about reaction to vessels and aircrafts is lacking
